This Austin speakeasy goes all out in creating an atmosphere reminiscent of the 1920s. Once occupied by a brothel under the name Midnight Cowboy Modeling Oriental Massage, you still must seek out the old Midnight Cowboy Modeling sign if you want to find the door.
You do need a reservation to get in, so plan ahead.
From the outside, Midnight Cowboy looks like any other Austin apartment building — intercom panel, buzzers, residents listed by name. If you're looking for the best vibe in Austin, you almost walked right past it. *Note: "The residents are the key." That's all I'll say.
THE VIBE: The aesthetic is pure mood—leather booths, exposed brick, and dark wood floors. It’s the kind of place where the mirrors have ornate wood trim and the lighting is kept low enough to make the rest of the world disappear. It’s intimate, quiet, and feels like a true sanctuary - endless and strangely timeless.
THE DRINKS: The cocktail menu — called the Arcana — is framed like a tarot deck, and the drinks live up to the concept. The Blood Moon was the standout of the night: full-bodied, smoky, and somehow also delightfully fruity — the kind of cocktail you don't expect to work as well as it does. The Ostara was its perfect counterpart. These aren't just cocktails. The use of bitters and herbals here demonstrates a level of mixology that genuinely elevates the experience.
THE EXTRA: We ended the night with a tarot reading by a dedicated reader in one of the private rooms at the back. It wasn't planned — it just happened. Organic, ethereal, and exactly the kind of moment this place seems designed to create.
OVERALL: Condé Nast Traveler named it one of the best bars in Austin, and they're not wrong. A solid 5/5. Whether you come for the cocktails, the atmosphere, or whatever unexpected thing happens at the back of the bar — Midnight Cowboy delivers. Make a reservation, especially on weekends.
