We met a friend of our daughter's at Here Nor There, a old-fashioned speakeasy. right in the heart of Austin, where you need to have a reservation to enter.
What a fun experience! When you make your reservation (which are for a 90-minute time period), you are sent a code. The speakeasy is located at 612 Brazos, which you can easily find if you start at the Driscoll Hotel and walk north about a half block and look for the gate on the left between the red wall and the graffiti wall. You put in the code and the gate opens. Once inside the gate, you proceed into the alley and to the door that is heading downstairs, which is on the right. One of their staff meets you at the door and takes you down the steps to a small entryway where you get checked in. You are also greeted by a life-size stuffed bear with a tray of glasses filled with bubbly. You take the bubbly and they bring you to the table. What a great way to start your evening!
Reservations are required because there is only seating for 55 customers at one time. You can sit at various tables or at the bar. We were given a seat in a corner booth with pillows, which was private and cozy. The bar would be a great place to sit if you are going by yourself or with a friend, while the tables/booths are better for larger groups or a date.
Once seated, you are given the extensive drink (both cocktails and wine) menu, which is seasonal, but also includes some of their more popular cocktails, as well as their snack menu. Our waitress was Veronica and she and our bartender, Patrick, were both amazing!
I chose the Don's Fish Camp cocktail, which consisted of vodka, elderflower liquer, mango juice, yogurt, lime and soda, which was excellent, and my husband chose one of their specialty old-fashioneds (they have several) and our daughter's friend chose a gin-based cocktail. If you don't see a drink on the menu that you like, they will also make a drink especially for you if you tell them what kind of liquor you prefer and whether you want it to be sweet or tart, etc., which is very cool! We also ordered the bar mix of nuts and popcorn, and the ricotta cheese, which was served with crackers. All of us loved the ricotta cheese dip, but I was the only one who really liked the nuts. The prices are a little high, but you are paying for excellence in a cool setting.
Everything about this place is wonderful--the ambience, the staff, the drinks, etc. If you are looking for a unique experience while in Austin or a special place to take a date, you should definitely add this place to your list! You won't be disappointed.
