First, I must say, we did not know what to expect. There were four of us passing through and saw this distillery on the map. We had to stop. Sotol...what is it and why do I not already know of it? Well, let me explain. It is the hippy cousin of the sophisticated blue agave tequila. Grassy notes, earthy, chilling and just looking for it's place to fit in. While tequila can offer peppery notes, smooth and citrus flavors, and a little sweetness on the finish, it's hippy cousin Sotol ( made from the Desert Spoon Plant) is looking to chill and hang on the pallet with a smoky finish, offering earthy and herbal finishes like pine and mint.
Stacey and Katie got us set up! First, Stacey explained the menu in detail. We tried various drinks and I personally loved the old fashioned. Smooth and exceptional...we asked for a couple more in our 3 hour "off the cuff" visit. The staff were amazing!!! Enjoyable and relaxing live music filled the room, played by a lady named Meg. She was absolutely amazing and enhanced the experience we were having.
We toasted and celebrated my brother's 45th birthday. Moments later, Stacey must have received wind of our birthday toast and well wishes. Would you have it, she showed up with a flask of Texas Sotol, and various items in a gift bag to offer Desert Door's birthday blessings!
Unbelievable! We will be back. We had such a great experience. Stacey took care of us while Katie rocked the drinks. 5 Stars all evening!!!!
