First of all I want to start this review by saying I am a cook from Mexico, so I do not take Mexican food lightly. That being said I want to mention this is not genuine 5 star Mexican food, if you want 5 star Mexican food only way to get it is in Mexico. Nevertheless for Austin (and Texas in general), this is 5 star Mexican food!
Taste is genuine Mexican with a menu full of favorites from such a vast cuisine. We tried many things because everything sounded great and nothing disappointed. The pork tamal stood out as my favorite of the day, I personally love banana leaf wrapped tamales and this one was perfectly seasoned and packed with flavor. The panucho was very good, cochinita was slightly dry and needed a little more flavor but the dish overall was an excellent eat. The picadita with cecina was good, not exactly the cecina I am used to but good enough to remind me of home. The mojarra frita i got with a modelo negra and while eating a taco and sipping my beer I was taken to Mexico’s beaches for a second which I found beautiful. Came with a Mexican white rice that tasted as homey and delicious as possible, the kind of food that fills not just your stomach but your heart and soul as well. Loved that they give you a wet towel with the mojarra frita because it is a messy eat. I also want to HIGHLY reccomend you order the blue corn concha. Tasted slightly different to any concha I ever had, yet no doubt this is a fantastic and delicious concha. I got to meet the owner/baker and she told me she keeps the oven on throughout the day as she is making them fresh all day. Please do not leave without trying one.
Service was decent, our server seemed new and needed more knowledge of the menu and forgot about us who were sitting outside by ourselves once or twice. But nevertheless was kind, funny and did a good job.
Overall I would highly recommend this place for anyone wanting genuine Mexican food in Austin. I try as many Mexican restaurants in Austin as I can to try to find a taste of home. Most fail, but this one I am definitely going back to.
